Global Cooling?

Global temperatures have not gone up since 1998 (WMO via BBC 4/4/08).  Could this mean the CO2 we humans have been spewing into the atmosphere like Rosie O’Donnall running a marathon is not really what we thought it was? Maybe the CO2 is reflecting more sunrays than is “normal” and it is really Global Cooling we should all fear.  Let’s call it Climate Change from now on, and nix the whole Global Warming thing, are ya’ll with me?

Now the real question?  Do you Reedabook, and others, really trust Governments worldwide to even attempt to solve issues of the Scientific sort?  How much money are you willing to give?  What % of your income will go to solving the world’s Governments to solve the problems?  More or less than you have given to solve poverty?  More or less than we have given to stop AIDS and other diseases?  How much Los Angeles?  http://www.desertdispatch.com/opinion/global_3006___article.html/warming_tax.html

First it was “global warming” and “the science was settled.” Now it’s “climate change” because of climatic nuance, but the science is still “settled.” Then we have things like cooling trends and likely measurement anomalies, but those are just all distractions from the “fact” that humans are causing climate change.

Look, I don’t doubt that the climate is changing.  What I doubt- because I’ve seen no convincing evidence yet for it- is that human sourced CO2 emissions are the soul or major cause of the change, and that current symptoms can’t possibly be attributed to normal global climate cycles.

I also haven’t seen sufficient convincing evidence that humans can reverse or fix climate change.

My beef with today’s global warming cultural-political movement is twofold- first, that it operates under the premise that 1) Humans are a major cause of climate change, 2) that said climate change will be devastating to human existance, 3) that we can “fight” climate change, 4) that only governments and world bodies can facilitate the fight, and 5) that we must therefore support widescale policy change and government regulation, including much higher taxes, to enable government to do it’s job.

A pretty bold platform for a community who changes their story every time the science doesn’t pan out the way they thought it would.

Secondly, I get hacked off at the tendency of modern environmentalism to pin everything on climate change.  I’m worried about pollutants and damage to the environment.  I actively support environmental causes.  But because I’m not on board the Al Gore bandwagon, I’m labelled a “denier.” Climate change is a good scare tactic and a great marketing scheme.  Al Gore admitted exaggurating a bit in his movie in order to encourage awareness.  Global Warmers hope that by pushing the fight against climate change they can get take on a lot of other problems as well.

Problem is, when the climate change theories fall apart, so does the credibility of the environmentalists using them for a battering ram, and any real progress that was made under the guise of fighting global warming will suffer.

Could not have said it better myself!  That was very well said Bmariner.  I am sure you have already read this, but if not it will strengthen your beliefs.

Wow, this is fascinating. I’ve never heard anyone argue you guys’s side of the debate so well. I definitely agree with you on some points, especially that politicians and other special interest groups could use this to their advantadge to manipulate people and that we’ve gottta watch out for that. Great dicussion so far.

A brief education on climate change can be had for $5 at Blockbuster by renting, “The Inconvenient Truth”, a documentary by Al Gore on the subject.  This should quiet down some of the skeptics who choose to continue ignoring this problem.  Most people would probably rather watch a film than read anything longer than a paragraph.

You are joking, right?  That movie is no more of a documentary than “The Day After Tomorrow”, which it borrowed scenes from.  There are too many unwilling to read more information than the media spoon feeds, which is exactly how a hoax like this gains any believers at all.  Keep walking the line Sammy, just don’t forget to let out a “moo” every once in a while so you don’t get forgotten.
