Ways I like to help.

.
Walk to close locations.

Replace all light bulbs with incandescent bulbs.

Turn off computers and turn them on when you need them (are we really that impatient we can’t wait 30-60 seconds for it to boot?)

If you have to use a dishwasher fill your sink with water to rinse them off instead of running water to do it. Then use a quick cycle. Or better yet, wash ‘em by hand.

Seperate the recyclables and RECYCLE.

Use ceiling fans instead of the air conditioner.

Take 5 min. showers. Just get in and get it done.

Use solar power if possible.

Drive the speed limit (if you have to drive)

If you see litter outside, pick it up and put in in a trash can, even if it’s not yours.

Doing some of these things will also burn calories making you feel healthier.

What types of things do you do to use less energy and help the environment?

“What types of things do you do to use less energy and help the environment?”

Our family lives a very environmentally conscience life. Here are just some of the steps we have taken.  We are always looking for more ways to take care of our beautiful planet.

*No plastic bags allowed in our house - fabric… or no bag - that’s the rule!

*No plastic containers / packaging when possible… that means, powder laundry & dish detergent, no pre-packaged produce, nothing disposable - from razors to pens to cleaning products.

*No Styrofoam to-go boxes!  We either bring a container for leftovers or ask for foil.

*Everything that is recyclable - must be recycled.  We recycle not just glass & aluminum… but chipboard, all paper, junk mail, batteries… We have to make a special trip to a local recycling center to take many of these items.  We try to gather up friend’s & family’s recycling to save gas too.

*We only buy 100% recycled computer paper for our business. It costs a bit more… but it’s so worth it!

*We have a rain barrel that we use for our gardens.

*We have a compost pile to not only reduce the waste we create & enrich the earth… but it saves energy as we have very little trash & virtually no yard waste to collect as we compost it all!

*We built an outdoor solar shower which allows us to not only shower in nature, but use water warmed by the sun.

*We wash all laundry on cold water & hang dry in the sun when possible.

*We use Energy efficient light bulbs, turning off lights when not in rooms, don’t leave outdoor lights on all night, purchase only energy efficient appliances & windows, installed ceiling fans in every room…

*We are vegetarians, do not wear leather or animal products.

*We use natural, biodegradable cleaning products in our home.

*Keep air balanced in our tires, carpool when possible.

*We reuse what we can.  Give away, donate, or craigslist what we don’t want & try to throw as little as possible away!

*The MOST IMPORTANT thing that we do, is make our daughter aware of the importance of living green.  She is the next generation… she needs to appreciate respect & care for the planet for many years to come. At 5 years old, she already knows more about solar power, compost, pollution, recycling & energy efficiency than most adults.  She regularly picks up litter (or points it out for me to!) disposes of trash / recyclables appropriately (i.e would never let a balloon drift up into the sky… pretty as it may be!) :0) etc.  Instilling, in her, a true love for the earth & all it’s inhabitants is the best way in which “we can help”.
