Last night, the citizens of the United States of America elected Barack Obama by a strong majority. At the moment this was announced, the optimist in us all felt the possibility of a changed America. As he took the stage in Grant Park, facing north towards the beautiful city of Chicago, we saw a black man ascend to the role of President.
As he left the stage, we continued our celebration. Our realization that our country, in all of its glory and turmoil, is at it’s very heart a nation of progress. As a nation, we looked on and realized that maybe we can put our past behind us.
That is when reality began to strike. I believe that this nation, for the last few decades, the majority of American citizens have moved past racism. The minority is not full of blatant racists, it is loaded with the men and women who choose to believe stereotypes and judge silently, the “them” and “those people”.
As the day began to pass, the minority started to come out. Some stating that President Elect Obama won the election only because he is black. That apparently, some time in the last few years affirmative action spread to the presidential election. These people refuse to believe that maybe a man who energized the the majority of the nation won on issues. These people do not accept the fact that when given opportunity any person can succeed.
So we have made the step towards progress, but I can only imagine that what we will see is that racist will become more apparent, and we will see it in the guise of politics.
