Last night (Nov 14) the sports guy on KGMB in Hawaii announced, “And here’s a shot of our very own international superstar, Jack Johnson.”  A photo of him was shown on a big wave (the first big swells of the season).
I tried to find the pic on the Internet but couldn’t.  BUT, here is awesome video footage of Jack surfing, cutting the waves, doing tricks,  out-speeding the waves, and balancing the unpredictable movements of nature with control and joy!
One thing I noticed is that this extreme athlete moves as gracefully in the water as on land (at least from the videos I’ve seen).
When you watch this video, it’s like watching dancers delicately maneuvering through the dangerous ocean waves: it’s magical.

Thanks for sharing smile  Glad to hear Jack is back home relaxing and getting a chance to surf.  I’m dying to get back to Hawaii during the winter.  We were there in March 2007 and the North Shore was spectacular!!!!

PS- I read in an interview that he sings to himself while surfing.. so let’s hope the big winter waves are inspiring some new music smile

ON THE NEWS TONIGHT (Nov. 19)
KGMB TV did a short story and showed Jack singing to an elementary school in Wikiki while the kids worked on Christmas crafts from recycled things.
He and Kim were interviewed and they talked about how they buy a living tree each year, for their kids to decorate.
The Kokua Foundation seems to be making a big impact in the local public schools because the next story in the news was about 4th graders and their farming project; which was growing commercial worms and feeding them left-over cafeteria food.  Then the kids bag up the worm poop and sell the rich fertilizer.
So Jack and Kim’s dream of combining music and bringing awareness and goodness for the planet is making a difference.  They undertook a big feat awhile back.  It’s so admirable to see ideas in action.  It took with alot of work and perserverance, but now you can see how the global green village is a making an impact!

Hey Meredith ~ Thanks for finding the link, especially since I had the date wrong.

I forgot to mention… the newscaster concluded the story by mentioning that he (newscaster) had been surfing that day at a beach where, thanks to Jack, commercial development of the bluff above, is now stopped.

Here’s a new interview from Acoustic Guitar.
Jack talks about tuning his guitar to Hawaiian slack key for Constellations, and for his new record “Adrift.”
http://www.acousticguitar.com/article/default.aspx?articleid=23450

“I showed it to my friend, Kawika Kahiapo, a great slack-key guitar player from the band Kaukahi, who taught me a lot about the slack-key tunings. He actually learned from Gabby Pahinui, one of the Hawaiian guitar legends. When I showed Kawika this new song, he said he hadn’t really seen those chords before. So that was a real compliment because he said I took the slack-key tuning and made something of my own.

Another slack-key tuning Kawika showed me is the one I use on “Constellations” [from In Between Days] where you drop the low E string to a C [C G D G B D]

Acoustic Guitar Magazine Interviews Jack Johnson
by Dave on December 19th, 2008
Frankly, we have been wondering when Acoustic Guitar Magazine would finally get around to interviewing Jack Johnson.  We have been fans since 2002 and when it was mentioned at a recent press event that Johnson is the biggest selling artist ever on iTunes, we had to take notice.  Acoustic Guitar Magazine just published an interview with Jack Johnson that has all kinds of goodies for the aspiring Jack Johnson player.

First, the interview is the first one we have found that gets specific about the acoustic (and electric) guitars played by Johnson (for the record:  Cole Clark FL2 acoustic and Fender Telecaster electric).  But even better, the interview includes tabs for four of Johnson’s songs (Constellations, Enemy, Flake and F-Stop Blues) with videos of Johnson himself explaining how he plays them.

It took Acoustic Guitar Magazine a little longer than we would have liked to get to Johnson, but we’re awfully glad they did.
