Sleep Through the Static Recording

Can anyone tell me what the noise in the background of this recording is? Oddly enough it sounds like static. Thanks.

My guess is that it’s static. I believe they used old recording equipment for this record. No computers. I could be way off though.

Do you mean just the song or the entire album?
My educated guess is that it’s actual static. They recorded the album on good old-fashioned tape instead of digitally like eeixen said. I love it - it sounds even better on vinyl!

I would say it may be actual static.  I always thought the end of What You Thought You Need & Adrift sounded like the ocean (or crashing waves). But that’s just me.

It’s because they recorded it on tape instead of digitally.  The easiest way to explain it is, tape is like painting a picture on canvas while digital is like painting on glass.  With tape there is already something there, with digital the file doesn’t exist until you press record, but the tape exists on it’s own just silence before anything is put on it.  I hope that makes sense.  That explains the noise.  And yes it sounds amazing on vinyl it is a totally different experience.

Nice description…like poetry!  It almost makes complete sense.  And, it’s like another metaphor for the description of the mechanics of life!

And wow, vinyl?  I wish one of you would invite me over for a listen…and, that I lived close enough to make it!  Gets me excited just thinking about it.

The static does make it more 3-dimensional, more “real”.
