So, I’m coming out of buzzlightyear astroblasters when I stop in my tracks seeing Jack Johnson walking toward me! All I could blurt out was ‘hello, how are you’. Without breaking stride he replied ‘hi, how’s it going’. After exchanging ‘oh-my-Gods’ with my fiancee he came back out of the store and chatted with his wife, two kids and probably his or her dad.
With everything I’ve read about how very private Jack is with his life and kids in particular it took every ounce of will power to not ask for what would be the facebook picture of all-time. After semi-gawking at him for a couple of minutes we finally walked away from our spot. I passed by the rocket ships and saw him again. Amazingly no one else seemed to even do a double-take.
I think I did the right thing with not disturbing him. Anyone else have any similar strokes of luck?
Does anyone know how to write a fan letter? Any responses?

That’s awesome!
The closest I’ve been to Jack is front-row of a concert.
I’m happy to hear that you didn’t disturb him, especially with his kids around. I’m sure he appreciates that as well.
I don’t know anything about fan letters. I’ve never seen anything on here, or any other site about that. Knowing Jack, though, I doubt he wants to receive 5,000 letters everyday…especially when the surf’s good.

How freakin’ amazing. I think I’d die! I bet it did take all your will power not to ask for a photo! That’s also nice for him that no one seemed to notice, so he could have a nice “normal” day with his family.

It was soooo hard not to ask a picture! The whole day I felt all numb and couldn’t stop thinking about things I could have said. I still can’t stop thinking…
It’s funny that no one noticed him. Jack was wearing a Ben Harper t-shirt and jeans. His shaved head, stubble, scar, wedding band looked exactly like all the pictures you see online. The grandpa was wearing a Kokua Festival hat.
This happened on March 2 which means next year it will be hard not to think about going on that day again, just in case ...

I was going to ask how he was dressed, if that’s why no one seemed to notice. I’m really surprised too, that no one noticed. I’m sure I would have been a mess the rest of the day… thinking it through, like you… oh well, at least you got a nice little treat to see him out and about.

My wife and I met Jack before the concert in Cuyahoga Falls last summer. She and I were just walking around he rode up on a golf cart. We shook hands and welcomed him. As he rode away my wife realized we hadn’t taken a pic so she snapped a quick shot. We were front row for the show and got some pretty good pics of him on stage as well. Also enjoyed Mason Jennings that evening. Perfect show!!

I would not have been able to say no. If I ever had the opportunity to meet anyone in the world, it would be Jack. He has been my inspiration and role-model for so long. I’ve been in a car wreck where my left side of my face collapses at my cheek bone. I had to have facial reconstruction.
I had a period in my life where I went through a state of depression and I have Jack to thank for getting me out of that funk.
I also consider him a lyrical genius and melodic genius.
If I could be like one person in the world, it would be Jack. I would AT LEAST have to tell him how much he has helped guide my life and I probably would ask for a picture of Jack with me as well. I would definitely apologize and probably feel bad, but how often do you get that opportunity?
While Jack may want privacy, you have to understand that as a musician, he also likes being told stories such as mine and seeing that people get excited over a photo with him.
Idk, I just could not resist that opportunity. I have a few goals I want to achieve in my lifetime and close the top of that list is to meet Jack.
*also, awesome necro ftw!*

How awesome is that!!! To be honest, I don’t know what I would do if I run into him. I live in Miami and I have ran into a number of celebrities and I have careless. But to see Jack …I would definitely say thanks for all his beautiful songs and for been such inspiration to me.

I hear yah.
I went through a similar time during a health crisis that thankfully ended 2 years ago.
I flew to Seattle to see the show at the Gorge Ampitheatre in August 08, and I signed up to be a volunteer. When he came out and we got to meet him, it took every bone in my body to keep myself for running up to him and hugging him…just to tell him thank you for the music that kept me going through my rough time, because like you, I was in a state of hopelessness that I didn’t think I could overcome. He helped me do that. I think back on the few seconds that I seriously contemplated it, and I’m glad I didn’t because I didn’t want to take away the experience from the other volunteers. I know why I’m into his music and that’s all that matters.
Thanks for the music Jack :)

Best I can do is at the first time I saw him in concert (2006 I think it was, in KC). I was row 21 or so, but there was about a 12 foot space/walkwat between row 20 and 21 so I had some space. So I was already jamming out. Then he starts playing Flake and I lose it. I start bouncing all around, jumping like crazy.
He finishes Flake and before he starts the 2nd song after it he singles me out and says “When I started playing Flake this guy over here started jumping, he has got some serious vertical leap.” He looks at me, points and says “Show them what I’m talking about.” And of course I flipped out even harder. My soon to be wife was so jealous, but she knew…I was IT lol…
Anyway, I loved it…and it may not be word for word, but that’s what the jist was!
A moment I will have forever.
