I totally agree. Climate change is the most important issue of our generation. The steps we take today will impact the future for generations. But it all starts with individuals like us—which is why this website and the community here is so cool. Personally, I try every day to lighten my carbon footprint. For instance, my house is heated and cooled with geothermal energy, I drive a Jetta TDI (which gets about 45-50 mpg) and run it on biodiesel during the summer. All of us individuals are a powerful force for change.

Crespidus- just out of curiosity and not in arguement- are you saying that Carbon Emissions do not speed up climate change? are you saying also that the research that suggested in loads of climate change communication (papers, advertisements etc) is wrong, in regards to when they say that all of the vehicle emissions, coal mining and other harmful industry are contributing to harmful changes that will affect our environment in the future?
just hoping you can shed some light on this things as to whether or not what they have to teaching us is propaganda or not, so that i can learn more about the issues.

Zlatucka—What I am saying is that CO2 emissions happen every day in nature. The THEORY that human caused CO2 emissions are having an impact on the earths balance is just a theory. People will have you believe it is fact, when in actuality just this one winter has thrown the theory out of whack. I am looking at the situation as a scientist, and I believe the theory is false. I think there are many people that want to help the environment, I want to help the environment be the cleanest it can be, I just don’t need a falsely hyped super-problem to get me excited to “do something.” It might just be me but when I here people start saying “the Gov’t needs to ‘do something’” I start burying money in coffee cans and sewing my pockets closed.
ao—Which is the “right one”?

Because the rest of the stuff is just hogwash?
I did not want to make it seem like I accepted your premise that the author was actually discredited. I would need to see some evidence.

Crespidus - Mar 12, 2008 03:11pm First of all, can everyone agree that the “Poll Question” is absolutely rediculous? How about this one...How much of your annual income would you allow to be taken by the US Government to be used to “battle the ongoing effects of Climate Change?”
I am a degree holding scientist that does not believe it is at all possible for humans to effect the climate! Does this mean I can’t go to a Jack show? Does this mean I am not welcome to listen to Jack’s music? I will tell you that I have not bought the new album, because I am afraid it is not intended for “people like me.”
Would anyone let me in their carpool, I’ll bring the Carbon Credits!
Have you heard any of the new songs yet? I’m assuming not. I’ve read all your posts and I think it would be interesting to hear what you think about any of the songs. Really. However, it does makes me wonder how much of his music you’ve listened to. Because, to me, all of his music/thoughts remain consistent. And, I wonder how much of a debate you’d get from Jack himself. I like your input. I have not read all your links...skimmed yours first and I get the idea without all the scientific facts. I agree with what you’re saying. And, though they are helpful for change, I no longer need threats to make me feel...responsible, sorry, bad. Because, to me, whether or not humans have contributed, or if they even can contribute to the climate, the truth is, for now, the climate is changing. And, pointing to humans, even if premature or flat out wrong, points to what is true...the ugliness of the human’s consuming/hunger.

Porcello...I am a Jack fan. I even liked the Curiuos George soundtrack! I have heard the newest single on the radio and enjoyed it, not as much as some others, but it will grow on me I am sure. I have been to 3 shows, and even contemplated going to Kohuna(sp?) Festival last year. I do not at all mean for my comments on this page to be aimed at Jack himself, although I would love to debate Jack on the issue. This site is actually the first place I have found to spew my opinion and to reveal the huge stack of info I have been collecting on the GW/CC theories for the last 5 years. I am a skeptic on most things, but this subject is huge to me. It is not about enviornmentalism or the planet or religion or whatever...it is about Science.
I find it hard to say humans are ugly/consuming/etc. I see too many good things going on daily to say humans are bad. I don’t understand the guilt driven conquest to put the human race back into the stone-age...I like electricity, I like being mobile, I like being able to contact family and friends. As I said previously, I am all for being as clean and “green” and sustainable as possible...I just don’t think hi-jacking traditional scientific means to do so will benefit anyone no matter what the outcome.

You didn’t receive any of my comments, not really. Well, besides answering that you’ve heard the recent single on the radio and you, “enjoyed it.” I don’t listen to the radio much, but I encounter it when I’m out and about, so I think you’re referring to, “If I Had Eyes"…
I wasn’t accusing you of not being a Jack fan or not being “green” and I didn’t say that humans are ugly...I said the reflections of human consumption is often ugly. The reflections of it are all around to see...smoke stakes on the rivers...electricity plants, polluted water, the sound of traffic, dead animals we like to call “road kill”, unwanted, uncared for animals we brought in as pets, smog, ugly buildings and factories, people on cell phones when sitting in front of someone, endless crap “made in China”, and then there’s the “flip-side”, which relates to what you’re talking about...the thought of (since I have not seen any photos yet, but I don’t need to) mono-crops for alternative fuel, wind “farms”, driving hybrid cars; yet we’re still going, driving, instead of just being. That’s what I’m talking about and I also think that’s what Jack’s talking about. Go on defending your points...I believe in their validity. I’m just another skeptic that’s trying to connect with an underlying truth...call it, label it, environmental, religious, whatever...to me understanding life is “science” and in that sense, we are all scientists. Because, I too have been collecting (receiving) information without being “a degree holding scientist”. There is a commonality to find, to see, and it would be nice to go beyond the defenses, of who knows what?..the past/change? But maybe you’re only intent is to make your point. I got it, I get it...Carry on.

i like how you’ve articulated your thoughts here, you were saying what i was thinking...well said.
btw i love that you guys are able to debate this subject without it getting personal! hooray for freedom of speech!

Anything i say here is an opinion and only an opinion. It can be changed or modified at any time as long as someone proves to me valid points with back up facts.
As for climate change...it happens. It has always been happening (think about the thawing of the ice age) the climate will go on changing for a long time after i’m dead. What i believe we should be focussing on is not trying to stop the climate changing but trying to prevent the earth from deteriorating.
We do have a negative impact on the earth. We cause greater erosion by ripping out plants and building in “beautiful places” like right beside the beach...where we stick our turf, tear out the trees and the grass that hold the sand in place.
We cause salinity (especially here in Australia) by tearing out the natural vegetation and over farming areas.
We undermine whole huge areas of land causing instability and some of that land takes over 100 years to re-habilitate.
We need to find environmentally stable ways of going about our lives before we ruin the ground we walk on and in the process, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.
Climate change is an issue, we’re helping it along a little bit faster than what is healthy (i beleive) but habitat destruction (namely our habitat) is probably a slightly more pressing issue.
