When “giving” gift GREEN

Total Posts: 1

I think the whole idea of living greener can be pretty daunting to a lot of people, especially the older generations. My husband and I have started to gift green by giving items like, reusable shopping bags, compost buckets, Energy saving light bulbs, etc… We do this for Friends, Family and all of our employees. It’s great for all gift giving occasions. It is a start small idea, but if one person passes on the knowledge to another and so on, it can do a lot.

Hey jenali
I agree that gifting green is a great idea.  It like to send a message to the people I love when giving them gifts.  This last Christmas I recycled a bunch of old jeans and made reusable bags out of the denim.  Everyone loved them.  And it has been a great way to spred the word about how easy it is to make green choices in your day to day life.  Lots of fellow shoppers have asked questions and been realy inspired by the idea. And in turn, I have gotten a lot of great ideas from other people.  I really wanted to garden organicly and had no clue how.  Now I am practicing “Square Foot Gardening” ,thanks to my local grocery store clerks, and it’s so easy.  The book is “The All New Guide to Square Foot Gardening” spread the word it’s great.  The book makes a great gift to.

There’s a store (Dunia) in my town that sells plantable cards. The cards are 100% biodegradable and contain seeds right in the paper. Once they read and enjoy the card the plant it, water it, and enjoy!

I agree. This past Christmas we gave homemade jams and jellies to our family that my son helped me make. This year, we are going to be giving cards showing donations made to Heifer International. http://www.heifer.org/

We can give a flock of chicks to a needy village (they also give in the US) for $20. It helps support others and there is no waste. I personally want to give the trees to everyone.

I am looking for other ideas. I have a friend whose kids are very critical about them not recycling, etc., and are really putting her on a guilt trip (the kids are 9 and 6), so she has asked me to help her get started. So, I am thinking that since her birthday is coming up, I will make her a bucket along with recipes for homemade cleaners and the stuff (baking soda, vinegar, etc)., to get her started.

Great idea to get others thinking!

Heifer is really great, but I had one complaint with them—after you give, you get a TON of mail from them.  It has been a few years, but, I will be interested to see if you have the same experience.  I wonder if we can get them to switch over to email.
