Earth Day Bags - eco-fun project for kids

Check out http://www.earthdaybags.org -it’s a great idea for a large group of kids.  I’ve organized this at my kids’ schools for the last few years.  All you have to do is contact your principal to request participation and then meet with your local grocer to ‘borrow’ his paper bags.  The kids decorate them with earth friendly pictures/messages and then you haul them back to the store to be sent home with shoppers on April 22nd.  You’re teaching the kids to overcome wastefulness (RE-USE of the bags is strongly encouraged), and at the same time spreading the message around the community.  very cool.

I remember doing this in elementary school in the 80’s! I haven’t seen it done since then, but I believe it’s such a good idea! I will definitely urge my locals to do this!

oh man i remember doing that in primary school - my bags were always so cool.

Paper bags have the highest global warming impact per bag compared to other types of bags. According to the US EPA, 70% more global warming gasses are emitted making a paper bag than a plastic bag, and 50 times more water pollution. They also contribute to global warming by destroying trees. In 1999, the American Forest and Paper Association reported that Americans used 10 billion paper shopping bags, consuming 14 million trees.

This idea was so helpful, and can’t wait tot use it with the kids in the fall.

Great idea! I have never thought of doing something like that before. What a simple, authentic, and creative way to involve students in educating others about our environment. I can’t wait to do this with my students.
