One of my good friends is a huge Dave Matthews fan but can’t stand Jack Johnson. This is problem because we have been talking about doing some acoustic shows with like an aux. percussionist or something backing us up and playing our originals and a few covers. I would of course love to do some of Jack’s songs but I don’t think he would ever go for it or he would be pissed the whole time. What is the best to get him to understand of great Jack’s music is?

Make him listen “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing”, “Breakdown” or “Better Together (the live in japan version)”... Those were the first songs I heard from Jack.
But before I listened to those songs, I was kind of addicted to some Dave Mathews Band songs from the “American Baby” album.

I love both Jack and DMB. I only really listen to DMB when I go to his concerts though.

The first album by Jack i listened to was the on and on album and I think that it is excelent. I think that the best way is not to force it to him just play him some of your favorite songs and if he likes it he likes it if he does not he doesn’t have to he would be silly not to though would you not agree.

better yet, take them out for a surf session, then listen to any of his albums or the above mentioned songs, and he/she will be hooked.

or better still… kill him… then we wont have to bother ‘getting him into’ Jack Johnson… anyone who can’t see that JJ is GOD! (not literally) shouldn’t have ears…
in fact don’t kill him, just use any suggestions above… apart from my one…
end. :)

If the poor boy had to listen to STTS 10 times he’d probably kill you!
I’ve noticed that JJs music is great as background music. But background music that makes people go ‘hey, who is that?’.
I’d recommend starting with Brushfire or On and On. There’s a sincerity on it that is hardly avoidable for music lovers!

They don’t have to like Jack Johnson! But anyway you can just let them borrow one of you JJ albums and ask them to listen to it. I’m sure they’ll love it because most DMB fans are also JJ fans and vice versa.

unfortunately, if someone just doesn’t like a certain band or artist, I don’t think there is anyway that you can get them to like their music. example: I hate U2 with a passion, but my best friend loves them. There’s no way in hell i’m going to listen to them. period.
However, if you want to play a cover of one of jack’s songs, sit your friend down and explain to him what the lyrics mean to you and what the mesage is that you guys would be sending to your audience, and then work with him(or her, whatever) on changing the song up a bit so that it sounds like something you can both live with. A cover doesn’t have to sound exactly like the original, funk it up a little or add a solo and make it your own… just be sure to credit jack, of course, for the lyrics.

There is video from Kokua of Jack, Dave, and Tim Reynolds playing a Buffet cover- A Pirate Looks at 40. It’s an awesome performance.. maybe you could show that to him and he would enjoy it.
It always takes me a while to really become interested in an artist or a band. I have to have some sort of connection with what they are all about. Explain some lyrics to him.. he probably sees him as the host of ‘the mellow show’ and nothing else.
Or maybe he just needs a trip to Hawaii…

I’d do one of two things. Either play him Rodeo Clowns (going by the name, that’s a surprise huh…) or get him to listen to the Jack and Ben High Tide cover that’s on YouTube. Those are both pretty amazing songs.
