I mean, I love this song… great song… but i think that ‘it’s all understood’ sounds totally different to what we usually heat JJ play. A friend of mine said ‘it’s ‘cause its a piano, not a guitar’… anyone else got an opinion on this?

It is one of my favorite JJ songs to date..more darker, and ambient feel to it. There is actually a nylon string guitar in the background if you can pick it up at some parts. Also, I love the rewound piano part - adds to the vibe of the song a lot.
I wouldn’t say it sounds ‘totally different’ though just cause of the piano..I mean, listen to his new album and him live..constant piano, or soft keys now.

does anyone else think that jack’s new album is dark and depressing? i understand all of the songs, its just that ‘on and on’ and ‘in between dreams’ were more upbeat and enjoyable to listen to. i think his producer screwed him on this album!

More beach music jack!!

listen to it more… you’ll see the ‘up beat’ side to it…

i have listened to it many times lol. but when i first heard ‘in between dreams’, i loved it! with his latest album, i was left wanting more songs like, never know, or bubble toes, or wasting time. i think its because jack johnson’s not recording in hawaii anymore

yea i agree babe

yea, most of the people on here have heard songs from in between dreams, like better together, and that’s when they became fans. however, those of us, including myself, that first heard him on G Love’s record, or saw him open for ben harper, would probably say that in between dreams was his weakest album to date. I don’t have anything against IBD, but I certainly don’t think it’s better than Brushfire Fairytales or On and On.

Keep in mind that this album was written after the death of Jacks wife Kims cousin to brain cancer. He was nineteen and also an aspiring singer songwriter. He lived with Jack the last few months of his life. I hope Jack continues to write what he wants to write about and doesnt sing “beach” songs like a puppet because his “fans” want it.

It’s a great, dark song.  I find Jack to be at his best when he plays the more downcast, moody songs like F-Stop Blues and It’s All Understood.

I like the version of this song that he plays live.  It’s on the guitar and it has a really funky sound to it.

Jack does a wonderful job at expressing whatever it is he wants us to hear.  I think he does an equally great job creating the sounds to accompany his stories.  Everything seems to have it’s time and it’s rythm, and he is brilliant at putting them together.

I’m with you on this one… IBD was good… but definately not his best album… I love sleep through the static, I think it is an amazing album and it still amazes me that Jack can put so much of his personal feelings and emotions into his music and just put it out into the world for everyone to look at… that’s bold.

lacy, jcoons32, you guys are right on. if you listen to holes to heaven or home, it has a similar vibe (without piano) to this new stuff. it’s great. music that actually makes you think, that’s what it is.
