Hi there.  Depends on where you are what there is.  I work for a local government and if you called my office, I would be able to point you to at least 10 different efforts in my local area (not all government efforts).  So you could try to give a call to the nearest City or County Hall and ask for the Environmental staff.  Once in touch with staff they should be able to provide you with many local opportunities.  Be sure to ask if there is a local watershed group in your area… wonderful opportunities to work on local water quality through these groups.  Typically a very nice bunch of people too.  In general, you can encourage tree planting in your area.  Just talk trees to anyone and everyone.  Not everyone realizes the importance of trees.  Visit the Arborday Foundation http://www.arborday.org and/or US Forest Service http://www.fs.fed.us/ web site for interesting tree info and facts.

Good luck!

I live in Tulsa.
We just had a huge ice storm in Dec. that took down so many trees in just two day. It was a very sad sight. So many huge trees broken into pieces. So the Arborday Foundation did a big fund raidser I helped out on. Other than that. there isn’t much on the surface. Guess i’ll have to keep digging.
Thank you for the help

One good place to start is your local Planning Department.  Planners tend to be the types who are involved and knowledgeable about these things, and willing to help you figure things out.  Your City of Tulsa website has some good leads, although it looks like they don’t have a department called Planning.  They do have Public Works and Development.
