Keepin’ It Real

Hey there,

I just waned to give a quick shout out to Jack & anybody else who’s willing to listen.

Over the past few months i have read a stack of reviews on ‘Sleep Through The Static’ and the common criticism is that Jack hasn’t branched out and hasn’t taken his music in a new direction etc etc.

So i really wanted to say that that such an invalid point to be making. His music should be judged on it’s own accord; not compared to his other records or those created by any other artist.

Jack has found a formular that works and one that he is able to create bloody brilliant music through. By critics pushing artists to alter a good thing, it rarely has good repercussions (take The Beautiful Girls as a classic example - they were encouraged by reviewers to try something new, and they may have now become a band that have cracked the mainstream circuit, but they are also one that many of their original fans are ashamed to assocate with)

Bottom line: STOP PUSHING JACK TO BECOME SOMETHING HE’S NOT ‘COS WE DIG HIM JUST THE WAY HE IS! :)

I think that Jack Johnson is a musical genius. He plays with time and words that I have not heard from any other artist. As a mathematician I tend to study his work and I am pleasantly surprised every time I listen to it. Perhaps if you listened with an open mind, you would hear more than you ever thought possible…

It is obvious that you don’t truly value the opinion of another human being by your words alone. By the way, getting high is just a way of eliminating the influence of time on your mind. Jack’s music is all about playing with metaphors and how time is not immutable or immovable but rather a helix that spirals in on itself and, at the same time, rises upwards.

I think I get it. Personally, hes my favorite artist, but we all have different opinions about what art should be, right? Anyways, I didn’t mean to start a fight, so… peace.

A discussion doesn’t have to be a fight. But the power of words should never be underestimated.

Critics always want you to expand musically.  Sometimes this ruins the artist.  Music should never be forced and it should be something that naturally happens as you grow as a musician.  It tends to work out better that way.

It is so typical for critics/media to expect an artist to change.  Everyone always assumes something bigger and better is around the corner.  I say, if it ain’t broke...don’t fix it.

Obviously, I don’t know Jack personally, but his music seems to be the perfect extension of his mental rythm.  His story-telling through his music is bringing alot of awareness to people that normally cannot take the time or energy to realise, for whatever reasons of their own.
I appreciate Jack for the images his music creates in MY mind.  I can’t imagine him ever changing, and I truly hope he doesn’t.
