After going through phases of committed composting, winter, dead worms, and laziness, we’re finally composting again. We’re not doing the worm bins (although lots of our friends love the worm bins), we just picked up an a big black compost bin from the County and are now throwing in kitchen waste and leaves. I haven’t gotten a batch of completed compost out yet, but hope it will work great to add as nutrients to our garden and fruit trees. I definitely like the idea of turning food waste into fertilizer. I know there are lots of websites out there that explain how to make your own. Here is one link to check out: www. compostguide.com |

I lost my compost worms a couple of months ago (they got too wet) :( It had all worked well for a year or so - with my plants benefitting from the worm tea on a monthly basis. I got my Can-o-worms composter from: |

I ended up with a wasp nest in mine…not good when you open up the lid and get stung multiple times in the face. |

Do you have any tips for creating a compost? I started collecting my vegtables and fruits except my parents threw the bag away, they dont seem to get it. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

I bought a compost bin last year from Garden’s Alive, I haven’t used any dirt out of it but I am hoping I get some good stuff once the weather warms up and I begin planting. I will let you know how my dirt turns out… hopefully in about 1 month. Come on Spring! |

Lots of good info here. I did not realize vacuum dirt and such was compostable!!! We are going to be designating a new area in the yard in the coming weeks. We compst now, but not correctly and do not use it (for good reason). |

I am in the process of construction a rotating barrel composter. Has anyone ever used one of these? I was just wondering how effective they are in turning the compost and so forth. Any input would be great. |

At my house we use 2 black, flexible plastic bins with lids. When one is full we put the lid on and set up the other. After a while, turn the full bin and whenever we need it use it. All our veggie scraps, egg shells, coffee filters, leaves, shredded paper, and bunny byproducts (news paper liner, hay, and poop) go in the compost. We put weeds in a separate pile because they have to break down longer to not start re-growing. We use a small bucket with a lid in the kitchen and empty it at least weekly (in summer more like 3 days). I’ve been doing it all my life so it’s normal to me. |

As far as composting goes, I keep it simple and just dug up a small pit 1’x1’ in my backyard. Put my kitchen scraps and clothing lint in my compost pail I got from this website http://store.compostguide.com/ and through it out once a week. Rotate with a shovel, add some water to the compost pail and dump it back into the pile. The compost pail keeps the smell down and the bugs out… |
