School Recycling Program

I want to start a recycling program at my local public schools. Everyday I see countless students throw plastic bottles and aluminum cans into the garbage to be sent to the landfill.  I need to change this.  Any suggestions?

Here are some ideas…

I would suggest providing additional labeled/colored trash bins and if possible, have a speaker (doesn’t have to be someone famous, it could be an alumni studying environmental studies for example… just someone older they can look up to and emulate) give a presentation about trash and recycling and why it should be done ("The Story of Stuff” at storyofstuff.com is a great resource).

If the program is for high schools, there might be a service club focused on the environment that could help with all of the above and they can get community service hours for doing it.

To fund the additional trash bins, you could hold a fundraiser or have the older kids pick out the plastic bottles and aluminum cans and take them to a recycling center for cash.

You’d probably need to get approval from the school admins but I think that if you get the school and parents involved, the school recycling program can be easily achieved : )

I’ll post again if I think of something else.  Good Luck!!!
