today, with a group of five other students i helped re-mulch several trees in a local park. although mulch looks great and helps retain moisture for plants, too much mulch can be harmful. a healthy thickness when mulching around a tree or in a flower bed is 2-4 inches. anything thicker can maintain too much moisture and breed bad bacteria. this bacteria can attack trees and other plants when the thick mulch is applied up close to the trunk of the tree. the bacteria will cause rot and ultimatly the death of the tree. sooo, plant more trees!, but remember when mulching, to apply the appropriate thickness and to keep it away from the base of the trunk. |
