A Note from Jack
GREEN BAND ACTIONS ON TOUR
In 2008, Jack Johnson and his crew are taking action to minimize the environmental impact of their world tour.
Greening actions include:
THE "ENVIRORIDER" (environmentally-conscious production rider)
In 2005, the Johnson’s, along with their crew, MusicMatters, and the leading environmental scientists developed the EnviroRider, an environmental handbook presenting eco-friendly options and actions for the various components of tour production (coordination, travel, venues, etc.). Since its 2005 release, the EnviroRider has been used by hundreds of artists and tours to date, quickly becoming the industry’s guide to green touring.
Contact MusicMatters for more information on the EnviroRider www.musicmatters.net.
Greening actions include:
- Providing on-site water stations, waste management, and recycling services.
- Reducing waste with the use of biodegradable food service items and reusable water bottles that can be refilled on-site.
- Fueling tour vehicles and/or generators with sustainable biodiesel (where available) to help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 78%.
- Offering eco-friendly tour merchandise, including organic cotton clothing, reusable water bottles, and tote bags.
- Minimizing distribution of paper at shows and using 100% recycled paper and soy-based inks for all printed materials.
- Using sustainable and recycled materials whenever possible for Village Green elements.
- Selecting environmentally-conscious travel and hotel options.
- Procuring locally grown and organic foods for backstage catering
- Offsetting all remaining CO2 emissions from the tour and for each night’s show using a unique CO2 Offset Strategy.
- Encouraging YOU to join us in action at each show by using mass transit or carpooling to the venue, visiting the Village Green, utilizing the recycling and water stations, offsetting your carbon footprint, and joining the All At Once community.

2008 WORLD TOUR OFFSET REPORT
OVERVIEW:
Efforts were taken to reduce the environmental impact of Jack Johnson's 2008 World Tour including powering buses, coaches and generators with over 14,000 gallons of sustainable biodiesel (bio fuels burn cleaner than petroleum and generate dramatically less carbon emissions), recycling and composting over 70 tons of waste from Jack's US tour dates, and more.
Because carbon emissions are a direct cause of climate change, the remaining tour impact was offset, striving to be 100% carbon neutral. Jack Johnson's remaining tour impact offset 1,518 metric tons of carbon from:
As a result, 4,172 metric tons of CO2 were offset from the tour.
The main cause of climate change (65%) is burning fossil fuels (i.e. driving cars and burning coal to make electricity). The remaining (35%) is a result of human and natural causes-the largest being clear-cutting ancient jungles and forests.
New Renewables
The offsets for the emissions support a variety of carbon management projects/organizations and are divided up according to the 65/35 offset strategy outlined above.
New Renewable Energy Offset Partners
This reputable company uses carbon offset proceeds to fund vital new wind energy projects on Native American lands. They also fund farm-based wind turbines and methane to electricity projects in the Midwest.
Hawaii's only group countering climate change through the sale of locally-generated carbon offsets and emission inventory services.
A comprehensive provider of GreenPower and government accredited carbon offsets. Offsets will be used to fund the generation of wind, solar, waste, or certain forms of hydro or tidal power.
In Europe, this organization is rather unique in that it retains full direct control of all their offset projects. Offset funds from the tour will be used to purchase solar ovens and energy efficient stoves powered by renewable energy for East African communities. Each solar oven/stove saves about 3.4 tons of carbon dioxide per year and reduces the need for burning firewood and rubbish.
With its mission to make tackling climate change simple, this organization offers high quality Gold Standard carbon credits and promotes carbon reduction education in the UK.
The first Japanese carbon offset provider and a member of 1% for the planet. This company offers VER (verified emission reduction) in Japan. Japanese offsets will most likely fund wind projects in Brazil and India.
Based in The Netherlands, with high quality offset projects throughout the world and a focus on improving local communities, this organization provides a rigorous reporting structure to ensure their offsets result in a direct reduction of CO2. Projects include solar power in Nicaragua; biogas in Thailand; wind energy in India, New Zealand and Taiwan and small-scale hydro in China, Climate Neutral Group guarantees transparency and adheres to the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) guidelines.
Avoided Deforestation Offset Partner
Unlike groups that plant seedlings, this non-profit organization protects large tracts of carbon-absorbing ancient and bio diverse jungles in South America, Their actions are informed by scientific research and designed to achieve concrete and measurable outcomes. They are committed to concentrating resources and capabilities in the field, where they have the largest conservation impact. ACA is unique in they have identified the most critical area of the world, based upon concentration of biodiversity. Additionally, this area has been identified as the region that will most likely survive as the planet's temperature rise.

- Air travel and hotels
- Shipping
- Ground transportation
- Energy use
- Generator/fuel use
As a result, 4,172 metric tons of CO2 were offset from the tour.
- The tour was offset 65% through contributions to new renewable energy sources like wind and solar, and 35% through programs that protect large tracts of old-growth jungles and forests
- The offset dollars benefited local communities that the tour traveled to as much as possible

New Renewables
- Wind and solar energy create zero CO2 emissions
- More new wind and solar farms means less need for energy from fossil fuels
- New wind and solar production can lessen our dependence on foreign oil
- When forests are cut, CO2 is released. By keeping forests intact, carbon is sequestered
- Forests absorb CO2 and produce oxygen. They are the "lungs" of our planet
- Biodiversity is protected

BRUSHFIRE RECORDS GREENING
Recorded using 100% solar energy, printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper, and carrying the 1% For The Planet logo, Jack Johnson’s new album, Sleep Through the Static, is paving the way for responsible CD production and packaging.
Brushfire Studio & Offices
Jack Johnson’s record label, Brushfire Records, is blazing a trail in environmental responsibility among record labels.
Brushfire is headquartered in a newly-renovated green building, leveraging a number of innovative features to keep their environmental impact low. These features include:
In addition, the label pays close attention to its internal operations, monitoring energy use and increasing efficiency through lighting and fixtures, reducing office waste and ensuring company-wide recycling, sourcing sustainable goods for office supplies and other operational needs, and offsetting all company CO2 emissions.
On the cd packing front, Brushfire convinced Universal (their manufacturer/distributor) to use FSC-certified recycled paper for all their Brushfire music and movie releases, developed the first 100% recycled plastic tray, and piloted a new form of environmental packaging called Eco-Pac. Brushfire is currently challenging Universal to develop a biodegradable corn-based shrink wrap and soy-based inks, and are developing a recycled plastic slimline or paper replacement for all radio singles.

1% For The Planet
Jack Johnson and his Brushfire label are members of 1% for the Planet and they encourage their Brushfire artists to do the same. In 2004, Jack Johnson became the 50th member of 1% For The Planet. Johnson’s 2005 Brushfire Records release of In Between Dreams became the first album to carry the 1% label and his 2005 world tour promoted the 1% For The Planet mission and brand and helped to launch the organization. Today 1% For The Planet is a growing global movement of more than 1,100 companies that donate 1% of their sales to a network of more than 1,700 environmental organizations worldwide. In the process, these companies pave the way for more corporate responsibility in the business community.
